Call For Entry: Window Wonderland
A Holiday Arts Exhibit in Harbor East
Application Deadline: Friday, September 19, 2014

On behalf of Harbor East Management Group, Maryland Art Place (MAP) is pleased to announce an open ‘Call to Artists’ for the third annual “Window Wonderland” project, a storefront, holiday initiative within the Harbor East corridor. Collectively, MAP & Harbor East are seeking unique, holiday presentations/installations to be placed in a variety of retail locations. Storefront installations will be on view from Friday, November 14, 2014 – Friday, January 2, 2015, with a formal unveiling scheduled for Wednesday, November 19, 2014.

This year thirteen retail locations are participating in this public art project. Individual artists or artist collectives interested in applying should review the Directory of Participating Retailers attached to the application below for window locations; selecting their top 3 choices as part of their proposal. Artists will be expected to work with their partner retailer and should consider day and nighttime visibility when proposing an installation. Tours of participating retail locations will take place Wednesday, August 20 @ 6pm and Saturday, September 6 @ 11am. Applicants should meet outside the Whole Foods Market entrance on the corner of Fleet and S. Exeter Streets.

Selected artists will receive a $500 honorarium from Harbor East and must submit a budget along with their proposal, outlining the expense of their project. During the unveiling on Wednesday, November 19 a small jury consisting of Cara Ober, Artist and Founder/Owner of BMoreArt, Priya Bhayana, Director Bromo Arts District, and Jessica Bizik, Editor in Chief Baltimore Style Magazine will announce a “Best in Show” window installation. The winning artist or artist collective will receive a $1,000 cash prize from Harbor East.

Call For Entry: CREATING CONNECTIONS
A Commission & Print Replication Project
Application Deadline: Tuesday September 2nd, 2014

Maryland Art Place (MAP), in partnership with CyberPoint International is pleased to announce an open ‘Call to Artists’. As an extension of MAP’s annual IMPRINT Project, MAP is working with CyberPoint to offer a unique opportunity to female visual artists of the greater Baltimore metropolitan area. Collectively, MAP and CyberPoint wish to commission a new work of art as well as license the image of that new work of art. The image of that artwork will be reproduced in a limited edition and presented to the guests of CyberPoint’s Women in Cyber Security reception on October 29th, 2014.

ABOUT “CREATING CONNECTIONS”: We live in a time where cyberspace has become inextricably linked to the lives of individuals and organizations of all kinds. Cyberspace is the medium of global commerce and communication, and it is one of the most important factors in the social, political, and technological changes we see occurring today. CyberPoint works to create a future where individuals and organizations from across the globe can operate safely and securely in cyberspace and benefit from the technological innovations that increasingly connect our world.

As the aim of CyberPoint’s reception is to facilitate connections among women working in cyber security, they are commissioning a work that reflects the theme of “creating connections.” Inherent in the idea of connections is the idea of networks—social networks, computer networks and support networks—which may be an important point of departure for creating the commissioned work. This commission is open to submissions from women artists living and working in the greater Baltimore metropolitan area.

General Guidelines & Information
• MAP only accepts 2-d works for reproduction – photography, painting, mixed media or similar welcomed.
• All works must be no less than 4 X 4” and no more than 10 X 10”.
• The reproduction edition will be decided on, and agreed upon at a later date, but will not exceed 120.
• All reproductions will receive a ‘chop or seal’ noting CyberPoint as the publisher.
• All reproductions will be printed on an agreed upon archival fine art paper, expense absorbed by CyberPoint.
• **Artist agrees to not reproduce the selected artwork at the agreed upon dimensions of this project as this will devalue the edition. Likewise, CyberPoint agrees not to reproduce the image after the edition has ended.
• CyberPoint will cover scanning fees/photography associated with the reproduction.
• Artist agrees to use of artwork image for press and promotional purposes related to this project and event.
• Artist will remain owner of image copyright.
• Artist is invited to attend the Women in Cyber Security reception on October 29th, 2014.

In conjunction with the CyberMaryland Conference, CyberPoint International will be hosting its inaugural Women in Cyber Security Reception on October 29, 2014. Bringing together women from across the region and all different points on the career spectrum, this event will be an opportunity to get together and share what we are all passionate about—empowering women to succeed in the cyber security field.

Leaders from industry, academia, and government can reconnect and strengthen existing relationships while building new ones. Those just starting out in their careers have the chance to meet the technical and business professionals who are shaping the future of cyber security. This invitation-only event will be held at the CyberPoint Technology & Innovation Center (CTIC) overlooking Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.

Request for Proposals: IMPACT 2014
SITE: Former Northeastern Supply building lot, Brentwood, Maryland

Maryland Art Place (MAP) is now accepting applications for a fall 2014 IMPACT project. IMPACT is an annual, public art program developed to extend Maryland Art Place’s reach to broader audiences. Each IMPACT project is unique and developed based on the partnering site.

This fall, MAP is partnering with the Neighborhood Design Center (NDC) and Art Lives Here in Prince George’s County. Collectively, project partners have identified what will be a vacant lot, post demolition of the former Northeastern Supply building located at 3807 Rhode Island Avenue, just north of the DC/Maryland, state line across from the Gateway Arts Center and Brentwood Arts Exchange. Demolition of the pictured building below is scheduled for September 2014. Post demolition, the property will prominently include a long fence, which can be incorporated as a sub structure for the project.

Project Parameters: Proposals should investigate or have a dialogue between design practice and contemporary art, and how public space can be re-imagined and activated in engaging ways. Cross-disciplinary teams or pairs of artist/designers are encouraged and could include collaborations such as: ‘landscape architect + sculptor’, ‘performance artist + fashion designer’, ‘architect + social practitioner’, or ‘industrial designer + sound artist’. The proposed project must also include some type of community engagement that takes place either before or during the span of the work. Community engagement could include workshops, performances, community collaborations or an artist(s) presentation. Artists are encouraged to visit the building site prior to submission and all proposed work(s) must be able to withstand the weather elements. The project will remain in public view for as short as one year, but no less than one year. Both 2-D and 3-D works are applicable to this site.

**Please note that work should be appropriate for viewers of all ages.

Eligibility: This call is open to all artists and artists’ groups 18 years of age or older living in the Maryland, DC, and Virginia region. Prior public art experience is not required but encouraged.

The selected artist/artist team will receive up to a $6,000 stipend to cover the cost of materials, time and labor costs of the project. Installation is scheduled to take place September 26th through the 16th, 2014. All participating partners will host a public reception at the site on Friday, October 17th.

Payments can be made through Click & Pledge. Past installation work samples will also be accepted in addition to proposed sketches/mock-ups.

Since our establishment in 1968, the mission of the non-profit Neighborhood Design Center has been to improve neighborhood livability, viability and sustainability by providing pro-bono design and planning services in support of community-sponsored initiatives. This has been achieved by mobilizing volunteer architects, planners, landscape architects, engineers, and other design professionals who donate their professional services to help groups in the initial stages of neighborhood revitalization efforts. NDC not only takes on projects that serve the public good but also strive to achieve the following community service goals: • Strengthen community participation in neighborhood improvement efforts • Educate the public about the value of good design, planning, and preservation as community revitalization tools • Serve as a catalyst for increased investment in neighborhood development

CALL FOR ENTRIES: PLAY

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: September 26, 2014, 5pm

NOTIFICATION DATE: early November

WHAT IS PLAY?

PLAY is an exhibition that will examine games and play through the lens of contemporary art. We will look at play from a variety of vantage points, including: play as a vital tool for experimentation and innovation in art-making; play as a fruitful source of subject matter and content; and play as a strategy to interact with and engage audiences in contemporary art. This exhibition will take place in the galleries at AAC and on the grounds surrounding the building.

AAC will select approximately 7-10 artists to present works in our 7 main gallery spaces. We are looking for artists working in painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, installation, new media and more to propose a series of works, installations, and concepts that will occupy individual exhibition spaces. Out-of-the-box exhibitions concepts that employ new technologies like augmented reality and mobile applications are also encouraged.

A modest stipend to help offset transportation, production, and other costs will be provided to each artist.

STAY TUNED!

AAC will release two additional calls for proposals related to this exhibition for artists to activate our lawn with public art projects. The first call (to be released in early September) will be for two projects that will run for the duration of the exhibition. The second call (to be released in early 2015) will be for artist designed lawn games for two pop-up community events.

WHEN IS PLAY?

PLAY will take place July 11 – October 10, 2015.

WHO CAN SUBMIT?

Artists who produce cutting-edge contemporary art in any and all media, and who live or work in Virginia, Washington DC, Maryland, West Virginia, Delaware, or Pennsylvania may submit proposals. Any existing works must have been completed within the last 3 years in order to be considered.

WHAT MATERIALS SHOULD I SEND?

1. Artist’s Statement. 1 page, max.

2. CV/Resume. 3 pages, max.

3. Proposal. 1 page, max. Describe what you plan to do, how you will do it, and what you hope to accomplish with the show. Include information in your proposal about how this project or body of work is well-suited to the galleries at AAC and to the concept of this exhibition.

4. Work Samples. Submit either 12 images; 4 minutes of recorded materials; or 2 minutes of recorded material and 6 images.

5. Work Sample Index. List the works submitted, including the title, dimensions, medium, price or insurance value, and year of creation for each piece.

APPLICATION FEE.

There is a $35 fee for non-members and a $25 fee for members. For those who would like to join, it’s $45 and your application fee is included.
