Labbodies + Transmodern Festival + Subbasement Gallery = OVER UNDER LIMBO 2014

Labbodies Performance Laboratory is teaming up with Transmodern Festival and Subbasement Gallery to produce our most ambitious lab night yet, OVER UNDER LIMBO!

The Labbodies team will transform Subbasement Gallery into a cavernous entry/exit point to the shadowy world of Over Under Limbo, a mercurial world populated by national, regional and local Performance Artists for two nights only! We will incorporate both the Garden of Elysium, The River Styx and other nooks and crannies of the domain of Hades into our installation.

Over Under Limbo, is an exploration of the space in between the underworld and paradise (limbo). Hades, is the god of the underworld, but the underworld is not all dark and dreary. The story of Hades and Persephone is well known. But what would happen if Persephone took control? How would the story end if she had the power over her sexuality and the underworld were ruled by her?

Performance artists from near and afar are encouraged to submit proposals for performance works that includes the mythology of the Underworld, any narratives that include Hades, Persephone, or any of the Gods (greek or otherwise) whose stories you want to re-tell through experimental performance art (short and durational, installation, projections, spoken word, dance, song etc). Both emerging and established performance artists are strongly encouraged to apply.

A Blade of Grass provides resources to artists who demonstrate artistic excellence and serve as innovative conduits for social change. To that end, ABOG is inviting Letters of Interest for its Fellowship for Engaged Art.

The ABOG fellowship supports socially engaged projects that promote art as a catalyst for social change; projects that feature artists in leadership roles; dialogue-based projects that emphasize active and sustainable partnerships with communities; and projects in which artists engage community members as equal partners on locally relevant issues, or globally relevant issues as they apply to the local context. Projects in which co-creation with non-artists is part of the process are highly encouraged.

Fellows will participate in a program that features a range of services, including a two-day orientation that explores ABOG’s documentation and assessment models and includes workshops on strategies for community engagement; quarterly co-assessment meetings with other fellows to share progress and offer feedback to one another; support and feedback for ongoing self-assessment in the form of collaborative action research; and assessment by an outside evaluator.

Eligible applicants include individual artists as well as artists’ collectives with projects that engage directly with a specific community or communities. Artists may not currently be enrolled as students and must be legal United States residents or U.S. citizens who are at least 25 years of age. In addition, applicants must have a website with contextualized examples of past work that a selection panel can review.

Applicants are strongly recommended to attend an informational workshop on October 1, 2014, and November 4, 2014, before submitting application materials. RSVP is required.

Letters of Interest must be received no later than November 24, 2014. Upon review, selected applicants will be invited to submit full applications.

For complete program guidelines, information about previous fellows, and application procedures, visit the ABOG website.

Two artistic groups with Maryland connections – the Holmes Brothers and the Singing & Praying Bands of Maryland and Delaware — will be honored next month in Washington, DC, as 2014 National Heritage Fellows, the nation’s highest honor in the folk and traditional arts.

The Singing and Praying Bands of Maryland and Delaware practice a form of religious worship that encompasses one of the oldest and most historic African-American performance traditions that is still active today, predating gospel, blues, and jazz. Until the late 1950s, thousands took part in singing and praying bands at Methodist churches in Maryland and Delaware. Currently, due to a decrease in participants, on the Sunday when one church holds a meeting, all the current band members come together in that church and hold their service together as one ensemble. Participants come from churches all over the Baltimore area, as well as Annapolis and the Eastern Shore. More information about the Singing & Praying Bands can be found at arts.gov.

The Holmes Brothers are known for their distinct style of American music that blends blues, soul, gospel, traditional hymns, spirituals, country, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll. They have released 11 albums over the course of their career, including the 2014 album Brotherhood with Alligator Records. Wendell Holmes currently resides in Rosedale, Maryland, and this summer he is participating in an apprenticeship with a young blues musician from Baltimore, Brooks Long, through the Maryland State Council on the Arts.

·         Both groups will be honored at an awards ceremony with NEA Chairman Jane Chu and members of Congress on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 5 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. Location: Library of Congress’s Thomas Jefferson Building, Room 119, 10 First Street SE in Washington, DC.

·         They will perform at the 2014 NEA National Heritage Fellowships Concert on Friday, September 19, 2014 at 8 p.m. The concert will also be streamed live at arts.gov with an archive available following the event. Free tickets to the concert are available at lisner.org. Location: The George Washington University’s Lisner Auditorium, 730 21st Street NW in Washington, DC

Maryland Art Place’s Annual Fall Benefit
Exhibition & Silent Auction

Submission & Proposal Deadline: Friday, September 19 @ 5PM

Maryland Art Place (MAP) is pleased to announce an open “Call to Artists” for its 2014 Annual Fall Benefit, the Saratoga Toga Party. This year’s event will celebrate MAP’s move back to its original home on the west side of Baltimore in the newly established Bromo Tower Arts and Entertainment District.

The Saratoga Toga Party will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at 7 o’clock in the evening at 218 West Saratoga Street. The fall benefit is an important part of MAP’s annual fundraising initiatives, but more importantly the event is a conduit for MAP to present interesting and relevant themes being explored within contemporary art today. This fall will be no different as MAP pursues the topic of Greek and Roman mythology in contemporary art; and the visual outcomes of that exploration as translated through performance and 2-D & 3-D artwork. It is our hopes that you may submit a piece of work related to this the theme (newly created or already existing) to be exhibited as part of our silent auction.

Work(s) for Silent Auction: MAP and the artist will split the proceeds equally from the sale of the work – MAP’s proceeds will directly benefit operations and initiatives throughout the year; sales price to be set by the artists. Space is limited!

To submit work for consideration, please read through the following guidelines & information (no fee required!):

• 1-3 low-resolution images and work descriptions (please be specific about media, size, title, dates, etc.)
• Description of work must include an explanation on how it relates to the theme – Roman & Greek mythology, history, culture – can refer to clothing, architecture, creatures, Gods/Goddesses, (literal/conceptual) etc.
• Artist resume/bio
• Complete application (see below)

Send all information and images to benefit@mdartplace.org by Friday, September 19, 2014 (*please do not physically mail submissions) Download the full application HERE.
