Artists as Educators 2-Day Workshop August 5th & 6th, 2016

Join Arts Every Day in collaboration with The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for a 2-day workshop geared towards artists and teaching artists interested in working in schools and after-school settings with young people. Workshop will be held at The Motor House, 120 W North Avenue, Baltimore, MD Registration fee: $40 (includes breakfast and lunch on both days)

Workshop Details:

August 5th from 8:30AM – 5:00 PM Laying the Foundation: Defining Arts Integration  This Seminar examines a comprehensive definition for arts integration, principles for how students learn, and how the philosophy and practice of arts integration is supported by current theories about learning. Leave with a shared definition and practice of how to incorporate your art form with school day and other curriculum.

August 6th from 8:30AM – 5:00PM Anatomy of a Lesson: Designing Instruction This session examines the impact of lesson design on teaching effectiveness and student learning. Participants identify the components of effective lessons, see them reflected in a lesson template, and apply their new understandings to plans for their own teaching. Through participation in an example lesson, lively discussions, activities and presentations, participants examine the steps of their own instruction to plan ways to better facilitate student learning. A binder full of valuable resource materials, which documents and extends the Seminar content, is provided. Breakfast and Lunch will be provided both days. On August 5th, meals will be combined with Baltimore City Schools teachers providing an opportunity to meet teachers to develop potential partnerships. Attendance all day for both sessions is required.

Arts and cultural organizations in Baltimore are encouraged to apply for the 11th annual  Free Fall Baltimore, a citywide celebration that offers hundreds of free arts & culture events in Baltimore.  Held in conjunction with National Arts and Humanities Month in October, area attractions and organizations showcase the importance of the arts with free concerts, dance and theater performances, lectures, workshops, visual art exhibitions, tours and special events.  Free Fall Baltimore is produced by the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts (BOPA) and presented by BGE with additional support from The Abell Foundation, Atapco Properties, Henry and Ruth Blaustein Rosenberg Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. The program was developed to increase access, interest and attendance for the city’s many cultural organizations, especially for families and young adults, who are the creative community’s future patrons.

Cultural organizations with operating budgets under $300,000 are eligible to apply for grants ranging from $250 to $1,500 to support their Free Fall project. The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery opens a “call for entries” for the third annual Teen Portrait Competition. Artists between the ages of 13 and 17 may electronically submit portraits to the juried competition in the medium of painting and drawing, photography, and video through Friday, October 30 2015. The grand-prize portrait will be printed and displayed at the National Portrait Gallery in 2016.

The Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts is now accepting applications for organizations interested in being a part of the 16th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade.  The parade celebrates the life of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. onMonday, January 18, 2016 at noon.  Eligible applicants include cheer and dance squads, college and high school bands, community bands, equestrian groups, floats, honor/color guards, military groups and civic/community organizations.  Parade participants are required to represent Dr. King’s message and legacy.  The application deadline is Tuesday, December 1, 2015The application can be found on www.promotionandarts.org.  The parade kicks off at the intersection of Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Eutaw Street, proceeds south on Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and disbands at Baltimore Street.

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade continues to be an event for residents, visitors and communities to gather in Baltimore to celebrate the life of one of America’s most influential civil rights, political and social icons. The parade promotes collaboration as more than 50 organizations such as community and high school bands, honor and color guards and local chapters of sororities and fraternities come together to honor the legacy of Dr. King.
