Open Call to Artists for October 2015 at Carroll Museums

People have played games for millennia. Play is not only an escape, but also a tool for learning how to live in the world around us. Games help us connect with one another, build skill sets, and most importantly exercise the human imagination. It is through our imaginations that all possibilities can be conceived: alternate universes, creative problem solving, or even to better understand the stranger next door.

Games have been played in the Carroll Mansion since it was built in 1811, but it wasn’t until 1929, when the building became a recreation center, that play became its central focus.

This Fall, Carroll Museums will delve into the world of play and curate a house-wide exhibit that brings the facets of play to life. We invite artists to submit work drawing on the themes of play, fantasy, and imagination – from video games to ghost stories, from cushion forts to surviving a zombie apocalypse.

Important Dates:

  • Submission Deadline: September 10 at 11:59pm
  • Selection Announcement: September 15
  • Drop off: September 29, 12pm-6pm


Open to all 2D and 3D artwork with the following limitations:
2D artwork
• Must weigh less than 20 lbs
• Must be wired to hang from a single hook (our historic walls cannot take additional nails or screws)
• No adhesives allowed as a hanging method
• No painting on the wall of any kind
3D artwork
• Cannot exceed 20 lbs

All artwork must be for sale

Submission Guidelines:

All submissions must be entered through Submittable (https://carrollmuseums.submittable.com/submit). A $15 submission fee* is required. Submission of work and fee does not guarantee entry. Please note: You only need to pay once, so make sure to attach all your submitted images to one submission form. Make sure to name your files the title(s) of the piece(s).
Artists must submit a short biography and short statement about their piece(s) and its connection with the theme not to exceed one page. If picked, these materials will be used to compile an artist booklet.
Artists can submit up to 5 pieces of art for review.
Artwork for consideration must be submitted as a high resolution photograph with the name of the file the matching artwork title.
Include Title, Medium, Dimensions, and Price of each piece.
Carroll Museums will collect a 30% commission on work sold.
All submissions for consideration must be received by August 18 at 11:59pm

*Why a fee? Carroll Museums is a nonprofit organization and requires outside support to sustain programming. Your fee ensures Carroll Museums can keep hosting art events in the future.
