Gallery CA and Waller Gallery

Strength in Practice

June 1st – July 19th

Opening Friday, June 1st , 2018 6-10pm

“Strength in theory is based on physicality or mental fortitude. Strength in practice is not so easily evaluated.” – Curator Joy Davis

The exhibition “Strength In Practice” (June 1, 2018 –July 19, 2018) will contribute to conversations about mental health, body image, gender, violence, peace, and perception. The exhibition is not attempting to define a word, but unpack the world’s anxieties about a concept that could be equated with words like love and justice.

Strength In Practice is a collaboration between Baltimore’s Gallery CA and Waller Gallery. The opening reception is June 1st from 6–9pm. Both galleries have focused on uplifting artists in the city, and this group show will highlight talent from different age groups and stages in their art practices. Our goal is to be a part of informing and forming communities around access to contemporary art, and to do so, CA and Waller will offer free and sliding scale programming throughout the length of the show.

Gallery CA is a contemporary arts space devoted to showcasing local, regional, national and international artists. The gallery also serves as an agent for community engagement by offering regular programming and creating sustainable partnerships with local arts institutions and community organizations. Gallery CA is located on the ground floor of the City Arts building, which houses 69 artist live/work spaces.

Waller Gallery is a multidisciplinary art gallery focusing on art created by people of color. Conceived in 2017 Waller Gallery has a vision to support artists in Baltimore, the US, and globally through exhibitions, programming, and collaborative projects. The gallery considers all forms of art including design, social practice, craft, and digital art. We are passionate about engaging with artists at any stage of their practice. Notwithstanding the current political assault on artists, especially queer and poc artists, we stand with them and will continue the tradition of black owned businesses in Baltimore.
