Stuart Artist-in-Residence
School of Design
South Dakota State University
Brookings, South Dakota

Residency Term: September 26-October 21, 2016

Honorarium: $2,000

Residency Goals: Applications for a 4-week artist-in-residence are now being accepted from artists who work in any discipline and are willing to communicate their conceptualization process through drawing as dialogue and/or documentation. The selection committee is specifically interested in reviewing project proposals from artists whose practices are grounded in drawing and are able to share how they initiate and develop personal ideas through active and prolific application of drawing. During the residency, it is essential that the selected artist be able to communicate his/her project progression with School of Design students and faculty through open studio hours.

Given South Dakota State University’s commitment to “extend the reach and depth of the University by developing strategic programs and collaborations”, the residency selection committee especially encourages applications from artists who are currently residing and working outside and beyond the South Dakota region.

Residency Provides: The artist will be provided 24/7 access to a 1,200 sq. ft. lockable studio space located within an academic environment. Basic studio furniture will be provided; artists should communicate specific needs within their project proposal. During the residency the artist will reside within a furnished, fully equipped one-bedroom apartment.

Residency Requirements: The resident artist is expected to maintain a full-time working schedule that includes up to 10 hours of open studio time per week to share the development of his/her project with students, faculty and the greater university community. The artist will also be required to give a public lecture of his/her artwork inside the South Dakota Museum of Art Auditorium during the second week of the residency. The residency project will culminate with an exhibition in The School of Design Ritz Gallery at the end of the residency term.

Artist Responsibilities: All transportation, materials, supplies, meals and personal expenses are the responsibility of the artist.

Include: statement of residency project intent, professional resume not exceeding three pages, list of three professional references, and 10-20 images of completed artwork and/or images relevant to statement of project intent.
