THE EXHIBITIONS PROGRAM AT AAC SUPPORTS THE WORK OF EMERGING CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS IN THE MID-ATLANTIC REGION THROUGH OUR SOLOS EXHIBITIONS.

Exhibition proposals are reviewed by jurors who then make recommendations on exhibitions for inclusion in SOLOS. The 2017-18 jurors are: Kate Haw, Director fo the Smithsonian Institution’s Archives of American Art and Mika Yoshitake, Assistant Curator at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.

WHAT ARE THE SOLOS?

Each year, artists from across the Mid-Atlantic are selected for solo exhibitions to take place in one of AAC’s seven separate gallery spaces, or outside on the grounds resulting in an exceptional suite of cutting-edge exhibitions featuring art in variety of media. Proposals that specifically take into account AAC’s space, layout, and surrounding environs are encouraged.

Application Synopsis
Introduction

The City of Philadelphia’s Percent for Art Program, through the Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy (OACCE) announces a $37,000 competition to commission a site-specific artwork for Fishtown Recreation Center. This commission is part of the $1.5 million Lederer Pool Replacement at Fishtown Recreation Center by Philadelphia Parks & Recreation.

Overall Site Description

Fishtown Recreation Center (1202-32 E. Montgomery Ave. Philadelphia, PA 19125) totals 1.4 acres and consists of a recreation center, a hockey rink, three basketball courts, and a public pool. Affectionately called “The Swimmo” by local residents, the pool is highly utilized but in poor condition.

Philadelphia Parks & Recreation will replace the pool and surrounding facilities. Site improvements include: reducing the distance between the pool deck and the surrounding sidewalk to increase the site’s accessibility; installing a large canopy to provide shade; creating a spray ground with built-in water features to provide a cooling activity for young children and those not wishing to enter the water; upgrading the restrooms; and lastly, constructing a new pump room.

Art Commission Opportunity

The Percent for the Art Program and Philadelphia Parks & Recreation seek to commission a high quality, original site-specific artwork that celebrates the new pool as well as the area’s heritage and strong sense of community. More information, as well as a site visit, will be given at the Pre-Proposal Meeting.

Two potential sites have been identified: 1. The canopy, or 2. The surrounding fencing. Artists are invited to consider placing something upon the canopy, which would serve as both a sculpture and create shadows on the ground. On the fencing, artists are invited to consider adding elements to the entire fence; or just certain sections, such as the gate. A budget of $37,000 has been allocated for this Percent for Art commission. This sum is inclusive of all artist(s) fees, insurance, fabrication, installation, travel, and all other project related expenses.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

This competition is open to artists and artist-teams who reside in the United States. The City of Philadelphia reserves the right to determine additional eligibility requirements.

Artwork will be selected on the basis of creativity, artistic merit, technical proficiency, and relationship to the site. Long-term maintenance, durability, and public safety concerns will be major selection criteria. Artists are required to comply with applicable rules, contracts, and procedures of all governmental boards and agencies of the City of Philadelphia.

Call for Artists: Annmarie Sculpture Garden Juried Exhibition

Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center is calling for entries for its Kindred Exhibit opening from  August 11, 2017 to January 28, 2018. This exhibit invites artists to celebrate the stories, people, and places that define them. The jury invites artists to celebrate how we are defined by the past, and the lives of those who have come before us. All media welcome; small to large-scale installations; new media encouraged; indoor and outdoor works accepted; cash awards to be presented.

Call for Artists: BWA for BLM (at Project Row Houses)

The next intervention of BWA for BLM will take place at Project Row Houses in Houston, Texas opening March 24 and closing June 4.  As part of Simone Leigh’s PRH residency,  Black Women Artists for Black Lives Matter will create site specific, multimedia art installations within all 7 houses. These installations will invite viewers to engage with and learn about the work of black women artists, writers, theorists and scholars.

The Digital Group of BWA for BLM will create an installation entitled, “Well Read Women” within one house. Overlapping audio will emanate throughout the space and will be composed of the voices of members of BWA for BLM and the larger community reading various inspirational texts by black men and women scholars, theorists, writers, artists, educators and activists. Simultaneously, digitally manipulated text and imagery will be projected and wheat pasted onto the interior walls of the house. The wheatpasting will also consist of various found ephemera from the Houston community. The installation will include cushions and seating that will create a calm environment for reflection and meditation. This work creates an opportunity for viewers to simultaneously reflect on the visual art while considering the socio-political struggles, activism, and excellence of Black women. Additionally this installation will include the literature of women of color who have worked in tandem with the struggle for freedom and liberation in society and in the arts.
