Have an Idea to Make Baltimore Better? Need Money to Make It Happen?

Ignite Baltimore is making two Ignition Grants, of up to $2,250 each, available to support new, innovative projects that aim to make Baltimore a better place to live and work. These grants are funded by proceeds from Ignite Baltimore ticket sales.

Applications must be submitted by February 22, 2013 at 11:59 pm EST. The selected projects will be announced at Ignite Baltimore 12 on March 28, 2013. Application available here.

Past grants have supported supplies for low-earning women, who are using their crafting skills to generate income, so that they could sell their products at farmers’ markets; interviews with people who are homeless to encourage understanding of the experience of homelessness; a filmmaking course for youth in the Walbrook neighborhood; video tours of Baltimore’s parks and trails; and development of a website to showcase Baltimore’s dance community.

Torch singer Jen Tydings (Motorettes) and pianist Erica Patokage get us in the mood on February 1 at this preview show for Baltimore’s biggest costume bash – The Marquee Ball. Jen sings torch songs to Erica’s sultry piano. Sip cocktails from our cash bar. In between Jen’s sets, John Wright and his troupe of actors mingle in 40’s period costume and perform vignettes from film noir “greats.” Narration and sound effects provided by WYPR’s The Signal’s Aaron Henkin. It’s all to set the stage and give you ideas for Baltimore’s biggest costume party of the year, Creative Alliance’s Marquee Ball with this year’s theme based on the film noir Kiss Me Deadly.

Come early on February 1 to see J.M Giordano unveil a large Marquee Ball Kiss Me Deadly photo in Creative Alliance’s Amalie Rothschild Gallery. 7pm cocktails, cash bar, 8pm show. $15, $10 mbrs, sts. Guest Spot  is proud to present a solo exhibition of photography by Carl Gunhouse and the release of his new book, Falling Apart published by Waal-Boght Press, Brooklyn NY. Guest Spot Project Space will feature Small Studies in Orientation by Baltimore Artist Max Guy. Opening Saturday February 9, 2013, the works will be on view through March 23, 2013. A book signing will be held in conjunction with the opening.

The National Endowment for the Arts cooperates with the U.S. Japan Friendship Commission in the implementation of this program. The U.S/Japan Creative Artists’ Program provides support for up to five outstanding contemporary or traditional artists from the United States to spend a three-month residency in Japan.  Eligible applicants are architects, choreographers, composers, creative writers, designers, media artists, playwrights, visual artists, or solo theater artists who work with original material (including puppeteers, storytellers and performance artists). Multidisciplinary artists and artistic directors of theater or dance companies are also eligible.

The next deadline for this program is March 1, 2013 for residencies in 2014.

Selected artists will receive:

  • A grant award in the amount of $20,000 to cover housing, living, and professional expenses for either 1 artist or a collaborative team.
  • Up to $2,000 for round trip transportation for the artist.

The Global Connections program was designed by TCG and is funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. US-based theatre organizations and individual artists may apply to one of the two initiatives of this new program:
Global Connections—On the Road:This initiative will award 10 grants of up to $5,000 each to foster new relationships with international colleagues that will inspire each other’s work and aesthetics by creating opportunities for cultural exchange.

Global Connections—In the Lab: This initiative will award six grants of $10,000 each to further pre-existing international collaborations by supporting residencies that either advance the development of a piece or explore elements leading up to a full production.

On the Road grants are not prerequisites for the In the Lab grants. Previous recipients of either initiative are not eligible to apply in consecutive cycles. Please review the deadline section which identifies specific periods for all eligible activity.

Both initiatives of the Global Connections program were created in response to the natural evolution and development of TCG’s previous international programs and services. To date, many U.S.-based theatre organizations and individual artists have made substantial strides in learning and developing projects with colleagues abroad. As a result of this work, many require additional resources to further the relationships established from their initial travels and first encounters. In addition, TCG recognizes the importance in continuing to seed new relationships by building a solid foundation for fruitful cultural exchanges—The Global Connections On the Road and In the Lab grants are designed to meet these two distinct needs.  Application deadline: March 11, 2013.
