C. Grimaldis Gallery is pleased to present two solo exhibitions this spring: HIDENORI ISHII: IcePlants and FOON SHAM: Building the Natural. Both exhibitions open on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 with a reception from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

IcePlants is Hidenori Ishii‘s second solo exhibition at C. Grimaldis Gallery. His new work continues his investigation of integrating psychological and environmental systems into self-contained worlds. The paintings’ surfaces have a slick, sensuous quality; they contain both natural and man-made patterns, and suggest transformations, erosions, and constructions of improbable environments. The new paintings in particular respond to the destruction of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in 2011, a consequence of both natural disasters and human error, and its ongoing impact on the landscape.

Ishii received his Master of Fine Arts degree from the Hoffberger School of Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art. He now lives and works in Long Island City, NY and has exhibited in the Contemporary Museum in Baltimore, MD, the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, and numerous galleries in New York including Sloan Fine Art, Ligne Roset, and Black and White Gallery. He also earned several prominent awards and was nominated for the Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA Fellowship in 2004.

Foon Sham makes his C. Grimaldis Gallery debut with Building the Natural, a solo exhibition of sculptures and drawings. With his preferred media of wood and paper, Sham explores the intersection between the natural and the man-made by using the forces of chance and intention to strike a delicate balance between control and chaos.

The centerpiece of Building the Natural is “Channel”, a life-sized cast iron sculpture that was previously installed on the Washington Mall in Washington, D.C. Sham has exhibited internationally with solo exhibitions in Hong Kong, Norway, and Australia. His artwork resides in the collections of the Hong Kong Museum of Art, the Museo De Arte Contemporaneo Ateneo de Yucatan in Mexico, and the corporate collections of PNC Bank, Freddie Mac Corp., and Sallie Mae Corp.

Sham is a professor of sculpture at University of Maryland, College Park. He received his Master of Fine Arts degree from the Virginia Commonwealth University, and is now based in Washington, D.C.

Pinebox Art Center is kicking of their first series of workshops.

Saturday March 23rd, 1 – 4PM: All About Lensbaby

Take pictures like you never have before!  Join us for “All About Lensbaby”, a 3-hour workshop and learn how Lensbaby selective focus lenses can allow you to be far more creative than simply using basic camera operation. Lensbaby brand lenses for SLR cameras combine a simple lens with a ball & socket mechanism to create special-effects for extra creativity. Lensbaby lenses are popular with photographers for the creative possibilities of the selective focus and bokeh effects. The lens can be manipulated off axis to move the sharpest area of focus (called the “sweet spot”) to almost anywhere in the frame. This allows the important part of the subject to be rendered fairly sharp, with everything else out of focus, even if it is the same distance from the camera. In this workshop, we’ll have all the new Lensbaby lenses for you to try out on your DSLR camera.  We’ll experiment with eight different optics, as well as the macro, wide angle and creative aperture accessories. There will be a still-life to photograph, as well as a professional model for shoot, as well.

Please bring your DSLR camera with plenty of memory cards and be ready to have fun shooting with a Lensbaby!

Workshop sponsored by Lensbaby (www.lensbaby.com) and Nations Photo Lab (www.nationsphotolab.com). Participants of this workshop will receive a special discount code for use with purchasing products on the Lensbaby website, and they will also receive a $25 gift card with Nations Photo Lab!  Class Fee $40, Photo Club Members $35 ($5 discount).

To register please call Leo Heppner at 443-421-1662 or email Leo: leopictureman@gmail.com

Tim Horjus: Solo Exhibition. March 9, 2013 from 5:30pm until 7:30pm.

In his first large-scale, solo exhibition in Baltimore, Timothy Horjus presents work that evokes our current social and cultural reality by using the language of modernism in conjunction with traditional references to discuss our reliance on digitally-produced and transmitted information. He states, “I am attempting to evoke…the contemporary condition. This condition is one of awkwardness. We find our technology and culture increasingly pushing us away from ‘real’ experiences in lieu of digital ones, all the while we continue to utilize our digital devices to have more ‘human’ interactions.” Horjus’ exhibition closes with a performance by Elm City Dance Collective. The dance group presents Contemporanea, a piece conceived by Lindsey Bauer – dance artist, teacher, and choreographer. The work is inspired by the Brazilian martial art of capoeira, and incorporates elements of the art form with dance and music.

A Baltimore native and former Highlandtown resident, Lindsey Bauer holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in performance and choreography from Arizona State University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in performance and education from Towson University.

Timothy Horjus received his M.F.A. in May, 2010 from the University of Maryland College Park where he was a recipient of both the Ann Truitt Fellowship and the David C. Driskell Teaching Award. His work has been shown extensively in the Baltimore and Washington, DC area. He balances teaching at MICA with a studio practice, running his construction company, and reveling in his family.

Closing performance Sat Apr 13, 4-5pm: Contemporanea by Elm City Dance Collective.
